We support Intel Xeon (E5, E7 or Scalable) family or Atom C3000 processor based servers. You just need to make sure there are at least two cores and 8GB RAM available if you want to test scalability.
The binaries come in formats for the following types of installations:
– Via a USB device or CDROM on a bare-metal system (.img or .iso)
– Ready-to-use as a VM image (.ova, .qcow2 or .iso)
Installing the image is straightforward and will let you log into the CLI in a few minutes.
Read our Standard Evaluation License Agreement before you download the software. By downloading 6WIND vRouter software, you agree to the terms of our ELA.
Visit our Border Router Deployment Guide or CG-NAT Deployment Guide before starting your installation.
You have been granted the right to evaluate 6WIND Virtual Border Router for a period of 10 Working Days. Please skip the section about installing the license file in the documentation. The software is built with a time-limitation mechanism allowing an unrestricted usage for continuous 48 hour periods. When time limitation occurs, the software stops functioning. A reboot is required for a new 48 hour cycle.
You can run our vRouter on top of Linux KVM, VMware ESXi and AWS VMs today. Virtio, VMXNET3, SR-IOV and PCI passthrough are supported. As a reminder, you can also run bare metal.
You can run our vRouter on any Intel Xeon (E5, E7 or Scalable) family or Atom C3000 processor based server. Click here to see the full list.
We support NICs from Intel, Mellanox and Broadcom. Virtio, SR-IOV, PCI passthrough and VMXNET3 are supported. Click here to see the full list.
We have validated up to four full Internet tables. In theory, we can support more, as it is dependent upon the memory in your system, starting at 8GB for 1 full table.
Our vRouter implementation is multi-threaded and scales with the number of processor cores assigned to the use case. This, combined with support for multiple full Internet tables, allows us to converge quickly. Some of our customers shared that our convergence times lead the industry.
You can SSH with CLI commands or use NETCONF/YANG to automate the configuration.
We provide DDoS protection with features such as BGP Flowspec, which helps divert traffic to a black hole to prevent attacks by learning filtering rules through BGP.

Our historical 6WINDGate customers (Nokia, NEC) have integrated and deployed our technology with their management frameworks. For monitoring, we have prevalidated with InfluxDB/Grafana and we have a github with a lot of information about it. Our customers have also integrated easily with Nagios, relying on the InfluxDB API and Nagios plugin. Regarding orchestration, we are deployed in miscellaneous open source and commercial environments, including VMware, OpenStack, OpenDaylight, Cloudify, Nuage, Kontron, and more.
The CLI comes with traditional features such as completion, history and contextual help. It relies on a YANG data model that users browse as they would browse a file system. Relative and absolute paths can be used to refer to configuration data, making browsing very efficient. The CLI includes configuration commit with rollback on error and simultaneous access with configuration comparison.
The CLI is a NETCONF client that relies on our NETCONF/YANG API for an automated, programmatic configuration of the vRouter. To read more about our CLI, click here.
We used a 20G vRouter running as a VM on an Intel Xeon E5-2690 v3 CPU at 2.60GHz with Intel 82599 10G NICs configured in passthrough. But this same demo could be run on an Intel C3000 for lower performance requirements up to an Intel Xeon Scalable Platinum processor for higher performance requirements. Our data plane performance scales with CPU cores, and control plane performance scales with system memory. You can build a range of solutions according to your requirements, with the same software.
