6WIND Announces Industry Leading TCP Termination Performance on HP Servers
6WINDGate™ Packet Processing Software Enables High Performance HTTP Networking
Santa Clara, September 9, 2014 – 6WIND, a high-performance software company, today announced industry-leading TCP Termination performance for HTTP networking applications based on its 6WINDGate™packet processing software. 6WINDGate implements a fast path architecture with its TCP Termination module to accelerate the Linux networking stack. Benchmarks on an HP DL580 server with four Intel® Xeon® E7-4800/8800 v2 processors and seven 40 Gbps Ethernet Mellanox ports leveraging DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) with 6WINDGate respond to 6.5 million HTTP requests per second and sustain 107 million open connections, enabling breakthrough performance and capacity on multi-core CPUs.
Developers can leverage 6WINDGate’s TCP Termination performance to build HTTP applications with leading price/performance ratios, including web servers, media servers, cloud storage, content delivery networks (CDNs), cache servers, server load balancers, proxy servers, security appliances, Application Delivery Controllers and more.
6WINDGate’s TCP Termination module delivers a socket programming model that is designed to take advantage of multi-core environments, enabling fully parallel operations for both session creation and data path. As a result, linear performance scalability can be achieved as more processor cores are allocated to the application.
Example benefits from 6WINDGate’s high performance TCP Termination module for HTTP networking include:
• CDN applications: reduce the cost per unit of bandwidth
• Cloud storage applications: bridge the performance gap between flash memory and the
TCP Termination Performance
The 6WINDGate TCP Termination module accelerates networking applications by terminating TCP connections in the fast path instead of the Linux kernel. TCP applications create a socket in the 6WINDGate fast path to receive TCP packets for a specific IP address and port.
Performance benchmarks on an HP DL580 server include:
• 5 million TCP sockets created per second
• 242 Gbps of outbound HTTP application throughput
• Concurrent active TCP sockets only limited by memory on the system
“Through years of work on our 6WINDGate packet processing software, we developed a fast path architecture including TCP Termination that delivers breakthrough performance on industry leading multi-core CPUs with standard Linux networking, as proven with the HP DL580,” said Eric Carmès, 6WIND CEO and Founder. “Thanks to our superior architecture, customers can now enable physical and virtual applications with over 10x the performance of standard Linux, delivering scalability to enable the promise of open and cost effective next generation architectures.”
“HTTP is pervasive throughout almost all networking applications and the performance levels we have shown with 6WIND enable new workloads to be placed on industry standard servers,” said Claus Pedersen, Director of HP Server Telco and NFV at HP. “6WIND’s high performance TCP stack combined with HP Server technology provides leading HTTP performance for server based networking applications, enabling the promise of open, high performance networking for popular applications such as web servers, CDNs, cloud storage and more.”
“Advanced carrier, cloud and content distribution network providers require robust, high-performance solutions that deliver network-level performance, efficiency, scalability and flexibility,” said Kevin Deierling, Vice President of Marketing at Mellanox Technologies. “6WIND’s high performance network stack combined with HP Server technology and Mellanox 40 Gigabit Ethernet solutions address the rapidly evolving customer application requirements for next generation carrier, Web 2.0, and cloud networking.”
