Application Note: Packet
Processing for LTE Equipment
LTE (Long Term Evolution) is gaining momentum
to be the key standard for deploying Next Generation Networks
(NGN) that provides end-users with unrivalled mobile broadband
access. Features include data rates of 100Mbps downlink
and 50Mpbs uplink, simultaneous voice and data sessions,
and low round-trip latency to support real-time applications
like gaming and mobile TV.
LTE is based on All IP Network (AIPN) architecture. As
a consequence, the network architecture is much simpler
compared to existing architectures such as 3G.
Several technical challenges will have to be taken up
to deploy the LTE infrastructure. First of all, the aggregation
of a large number of users using high speed mobile access
will significantly increase the required packet processing
performance. Secondly, processing on each packet will
be necessary to differentiate and secure services. Also,
green computing will be essential to limit power consumption.
At the same time, infrastructure deployment schedules
must be shortened for faster revenue generation.
Multicore technology provides the needed processing capabilities
and flexibility, and offers a high level of integration
with lower power consumption required by LTE. However,
software design complexities persist, making development
and integration difficult. The result is a hinderance
to multicore deployment and performance. On top of existing
standards, and because the communications layer has become
mission critical, there are new requirements for software
to be designed specifically in a way that simplifies and
expedites multicore-based designs. It must:
- Efficiently implement fast path packet processing
to take advantage of the full performance achievable
with multicore processors
- Implement a complete, comprehensive, and ready to
use set of networking features necessary for LTE equipment
including VLAN, Link Aggregation, GRE encapsulation,
GTP and IP over IP tunnelling, Layer 3 forwarding with
virtual routing management, routing and virtual routing,
Per Packet QoS and Filtering (ACLs), IPsec, SVTI, IKEv1
and IKEv2 for security
- Be fully integrated with the control plane OS to
maximize software reuse, simplify integration and hide
multicore design complexities
- Run on market-leading multicore platforms with unified
high-level APIs for interfacing built-in accelerators
such as crypto engines
- Scale over different multicore architectures including
low cost high volume hardware for eNodeB and large ATCA
configurations for core equipment
- Provide an open architecture to ease integration
of differentiating and value added features
Demonstrating leadership in the LTE arena,
6WINDGate has been selected by Tier-1 equipment providers
for LTE Evolved Packet Core equipment (Mobility Management
Entity - MME, Packet Data Network Gateway - PDNGW -, Serving
Gateway - SG) and eNodeB
.
